What is Mudras?

Who invented mudras?

Although mudras have been used for thousands of years and have been seen in many different religions and cultures, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Tantric ceremonies, Roman art, Asian martial arts, Taoism, and Indian classical dance, their exact roots are unknown.

How many mudras are there in India?

24 mudras are registered in the Natya Shastra, whereas 28 are listed in the Nandikeshvara Abhinaya Darpana. The mudras are the similar in all forms of Indian classical dance, despite the alterations in terminology and applications. Bharatanatyam customs 28 root mudras, Kathakali uses 24, and Odissi uses 20.

Best time for performing these Mudras

It has been observed that mudra is more effective when practised while meditating. Although early in the morning is the ideal time for sadhana, it can be performed at any time of day and wherever the practitioner feels comfortable. One should not practise just after eating; there should be a break of at least 30 minutes.


In the practise of yoga, the usage of mudras is a potent tool for self-care and empowerment. The goal of yoga is to bring oneself inward. Mudras provide us the opportunity to turn within and refuel.
